Portugal D8: Who the Remote Work Route Is For
How the residence route works, who may qualify, and what employees, independent professionals and families should check before applying.
This article provides general information. The result for an individual depends on their family, professional and financial circumstances and on the rules in force.
Who should consider Portugal D8
The route is designed for people who carry out professional activity remotely for employers or clients outside Portugal. The evidence should connect the applicant’s work, contracts and income clearly.
Income requirement
For the residence visa, applicants must generally show average professional income over the previous three months equal to at least four Portuguese minimum monthly salaries. With the 2026 mainland minimum salary of €920, the calculated threshold is €3,680 per month.
Employees and independent professionals
Employees should confirm that their employer permits permanent work from Portugal. Independent professionals need consistent contracts, invoices, services and bank receipts.
Residence permit and family
After entry with the residence visa, the applicant completes the residence procedure with AIMA. Family planning, housing and financial evidence should be considered from the beginning.
Tax and social security
A residence permit does not determine tax residence. Days spent in Portugal, housing and the facts of the move may lead to Portuguese tax residence and reporting of income from all countries.
