Portugal, Spain or France: Which Relocation Route Should You Choose?

Three popular destinations solve different problems. Start with how you will live and work after moving, not with an advertised tax rate.

This article provides general information. The result for an individual depends on their family, professional and financial circumstances and on the rules in force.

The short answer

Portugal D8 is for documented remote professional activity outside Portugal. Spain Digital Nomad is for qualifying employees and independent professionals. France Visa Visiteur is for residence without professional activity.

Will you continue working?

This is the first decision. If work is necessary, France’s Visa Visiteur will usually be unsuitable. Portugal and Spain require a review of the employer, clients, working arrangement and social security.

Income and evidence

A bank balance alone is not enough. The source of funds, consistency of documents and connection between income and the chosen route matter in all three countries.

Tax after moving

A residence permit does not determine the tax result. Each country may treat a person who moves there as tax resident and require reporting of foreign income and assets.

A practical way to choose

  1. Describe the actual work and sources of income.
  2. Confirm that the activity is permitted.
  3. Calculate tax and social-security costs.
  4. Add family and housing requirements.
  5. Only then compare timing and documents.
